台灣史上最大規模的九合一選舉平和結束，執政的國民黨遭逢慘敗，6個直轄市只有新北市的朱立倫以兩萬多票「險勝」。險勝在英文媒體中如此呈現：

KMT New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu defeated DPP contender Yu Shyi-kun by only a narrow margin.（國民黨新北市市長朱立倫只以些微差距打敗民進黨挑戰者游錫堃。）

※contender (n.) 競爭者、爭奪者
※DPP (n.) 民主進步黨（Democratic Progressive Party）

這裡的「險勝」，媒體用了defeat…by a narrow margin的說法。defeat是「打敗」，margin原是指頁邊空白的部份，但也借指比賽獲勝在票數或時間的「幅度、差數、差額」，narrow是「窄的」，而「些微差距」即為a narrow margin，亦可用a small margin；所以「Peter險勝」或是「Peter以微小差距獲勝」的英文說法是：Peter won by a narrow margin.

同理，「Peter以領先10公尺的幅度戰勝其他賽跑選手」的英文說法則是：Peter defeated the other runners by a margin of 10 meters.

「險勝」除了用by a narrow margin的說法之外，還可以用：She won by a nose.

nose是「鼻子」，by a nose是指「以一個鼻子的距離」，原來這個說法來自賽馬；當參賽馬匹衝過終點時，如果第一名的馬僅僅以一個鼻子的距離超前第二名時，可謂「險勝」，所以She won by a nose.即指「她以些微之差險勝。」

除了by a nose用鼻子的說法之外，些微之差的險勝我們還可以用「牙齒」：She won by the skin of her teeth.

by the skin of one’s teeth之中，skin是「表皮、皮膚」之意；牙齒算是夠小的了，差距不僅是一顆牙齒的距離，而且是牙齒表皮的距離，可見得勝一方差距之些微！

在這一次的九合一選舉中，除了「險勝」之外，我們不妨看一下執政黨的「慘敗」英文怎麼說：

BBC：the ruling Kuomintang suffered its biggest ever defeat in local elections（執政的國民黨在地方選舉上，遭到歷來最大的失敗）

路透社：Taiwan's premier announced his resignation after the ruling Kuomintang party'strouncing in local elections（台灣的閣揆在執政黨地方選舉潰敗後，宣佈辭職）

法新社：China policy in question after Taiwan polls landslide（台灣開票結果崩盤後，中國政策受到質疑）

landslide原是指「山崩」，後來拿來指「壓倒性的大勝利（或失敗）」。

解析：

本題的正確答案是(D)。本題在測驗「被動式」的觀念，人解決問題是「people can solve problems」，而問題是被人解決「problems can be solved」，要用被動式。本題的主詞是「many problems」，所以要用被動式；答案(D)的被動式「can be solved」為正解。

全題題意為「鎖的問題，大多只需簡單的修護或調整就能解決。」

本題介係詞by的用法值得一提；被動式句中表示行為者是誰，要用by，例如此題的by a simple repair or adjustment。此外，by亦可表示：1.藉由何種方法，2.在某個時間點之前，3.在某物旁邊，以及4.程度或數量的差異。

例句：

He came here by boat.（他搭小船來此。）
We will arrive by 10:00.（我們將在10點前抵達。）
He stands by a tree.（他站在樹旁。）
He is taller than me by 2 inches.（他比我高兩吋。）

在「險勝」的說法裡，by a narrow或是by a nose，或是by the skin of one’s teeth應屬第4種的「程度或數量的差異」。

2. The ______ of the Board of Directors is scheduled for Monday.

(A) election
(B) elected
(C) elects
(D) electable

解析：

本題的正確答案是(A)。在冠詞the之後與在介係詞of之前的空格裡，應該不難猜出以名詞最為適當，所以(A)為正解。題意為「董事會的選舉預計在週一。」

此次的「九合一地方選舉」是nine-in-one local elections，看報導即學會了答案(A)的election。

既然學會了「險勝」是win by a narrow margin，那應該不難舉一反三的推知「大幅領先」是win by a huge/large/wide margin。
